There are moments in life when our faith is tested in ways we never expected. We find ourselves in trials that feel unbearable, situations that seem impossible to navigate. It’s in these very moments that God calls us to trust Him more deeply than ever before.
A Story of Unshakable Faith
Take a look at the well-known story from Daniel 3. The Israelites had been taken from Jerusalem into Babylon, a land that did not serve the one true God. In the midst of exile, their loyalty to God was put to the test in a very intense way.
King Nebuchadnezzar, filled with pride, commanded that everyone bow to a golden statue he had built. But three Hebrew young men—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego—refused. They stood before the most powerful man of their time and boldly declared:
“Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us… but even if He does not, we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image you have set up.”
—Daniel 3:17–18
Their faith wasn’t based on whether God would rescue them or not, it was rooted in who God is, regardless of the outcome.
What About Us Today?
We may not be facing a literal golden statue, but how often are we tempted to “bow” to the idols of our culture, comfort, approval, success, or the fear of rejection? What about when we’re challenged to compromise biblical principles of marriage, family, abortion or truth, living according to our truth instead of the truth of God’s Word? Will we continue to stand?
Are we willing to stand firm in our convictions even when we feel outnumbered, misunderstood, or judged? Will we remain faithful even when God doesn’t answer our prayers the way we had hoped?
I’ll be the first to admit, I’ve had moments where I joyfully praised God, only to feel discouraged when things didn’t go as planned. Throughout my life, I’ve faced many trials: challenges with the health of my children (each affected in different ways), difficulties at work, and hard seasons in our family and marriage. A delayed answer to prayer, an unexpected turn in life, or a painful loss can easily shake our confidence.
But it’s in these very seasons when we feel weakest, that God often does His deepest work.
The three Hebrew men were thrown into the blazing furnace bound by ropes. But Scripture says something incredible: a fourth man, “like the Son of God,” appeared in the fire with them. When they walked out, not a single hair was singed. Their clothes weren’t burned. They didn’t even smell like smoke.
The only thing the fire consumed? The ropes that bound them.
I once heard it said:
“The very fire that was meant to destroy them became the place of their freedom.”
Wow… that really hits deep. Maybe God lets us go through the fire not to punish us, but to burn away the things that keep us bound. The sin. The fear. The pride. And yeah, it doesn’t feel good while we’re in it… but looking back, we can see His grace and mercy at work, refining us, changing us, and setting us free.
What a faithful, loving God we serve. He may not always pull us out of the fire right away, but He never leaves us in it alone. And sometimes, it’s right there in the heat when everything feels hardest, that He does the deepest work in us. It’s in the fire that we’re refined, freed, and made more like Jesus.
Modern-Day Faith
Today, as a wife and mother, I reflect on Erika Kirk and the unimaginable tragedy she has walked through. Her story as a widow and now single mother is marked not by bitterness, but by grace, mercy, and strength that could only come from the Lord. She has displayed faith, love, and forgiveness in the face of profound loss which is living proof that God’s presence is real, even in deep sorrow.
Not all of us will face that kind of tragedy, but we will all face trials. And in those moments, we’re invited to cling tightly to God, trusting that He’s at work, even in the midst of great pain.
Stand Firm
If you’re walking through a difficult season right now, you’re not alone. The pressure may feel overwhelming, but Jesus is right there with you. And when the appointed time comes, and He brings you through, your testimony will give glory to God and encourage others.
Remember:
We don’t place our faith in circumstances; we place our faith in Christ.
God uses trials to grow deeper trust, stronger conviction, and greater obedience in us.
Our calling is to stand firm, live boldly, and reflect Jesus in a world that desperately needs Him.
“Our God is able to deliver us, but even if He doesn’t, we will not bow.”
